NOM 1120 - Tequila Siete Leguas,
S.A. de C.V.
Let me tell you, when it comes to hospitality it is hard to beat 7 Leguas.  My first
experience with this company was when I was making the new website
(
TequilaJoesCollection.com) and needed more information about their products.  I sent the
company a quick email and got an almost immediate response from Bertha who is in
charge of all the US inquiries amongst other things.  She not only answered my questions
but also asked for my address so they could send me some promo items.  I was floored by
this gesture, all I did was ask a simple question and this company was so thoughtful that
they wanted to send me promotional items for it.  We emailed back and forth and I
mentioned I would be visiting the distillery.  The next day, I had emails and phone calls
from people I had never even spoken to that just wanted to make sure everything would
be perfect for the trip.  Once again, this amazed me.  This company had already captured
my taste buds with their amazing products but know was continuing to impress me with
their generosity and customer service.  Little did I know, they would continue to surprise
me.

Upon reaching the distillery, we were greeted by Bertha, Fernando (the owner), and the
master distiller.  Once inside, our tour began and we were lead through the factory.  The
place seemed to wind all over the place with different rooms and hidden spots all over.
After the tour, we were treated to a tasting lead by Fernando and interpreted by David
Ruiz (
TequilaTours.com).  We started out with the entire line tasting the Blanco,
Reposado, Anejo, and Extra Anejo (only available in Mexico but coming to the US in the
future).  After we finished tasting these, we had the pleasure of tasting a single barrel
Extra Anejo aged 6 years 5 days…boy was that good.  Just when I thought things could
not get any better, Fernando told us all “hold on, I will be right back.”  Of course this had
us all anxious and curious.  After a few minutes, he returned with a big glass jug (about 4
liters would be my guess).  Fernando began to explain that this Blanco tequila had sat in
his family cellar for approximately 30-35 years (in glass not wood) and that he himself had
never tried the tequila in this bottle.  To our amazement, he announced that we were all
going to try it and started pouring it for everyone.  I can tell you this, there is only one
word for that tequila and that is AMAZING!  I would have to say that was one the best
Blanco’s I had ever had and could be the best (I would have to try my favorites side by
side to tell for sure).

After this incredible tasting, Fernando announced that now we were going to his ranch
house and he was bringing the jug of Blanco with us.  We arrived at the ranch which was
absolutely beautiful and were provided an amazing dinner which had the best potatoes I
have ever had (and for those of you who know me, I love potatoes).  Our table must have
eaten at least 4-5 bowls of the potatoes.  We were able to meet a lot of Fernando’s family
and even met his mother.  In addition, mariachis were serenading us (have to be the best
mariachis I had ever encountered) and the tequila was flowing.  We finished the entire jug
of the Blanco (which Fernando had us sign so they could display the memory of our visit)
and they brought out more bottles.  My snifter would only get about half way finished and
it would promptly be filled again.

When dinner was finished, we were provided with an amazing gift of bottles of the D’
Antano.  In addition, we were lucky enough to get our bottles signed by Fernando,
Fernando’s mother, the master distiller, and Bertha.  If that was not amazing enough,
shortly after they brought out gift bags with shirts, hats, mini bottles, and much more.
This was another moment when the hospitality of 7 Leguas continued to shine.  After
giving us all this stuff and treating us to an amazing dinner, tasting, and tour they still
would continually ask us if everything was alright and if we needed anything else.
Everyone at 7 Leguas truly made us feel like we were family and that there home was our
home.  Talk about impressive, all I could say when asked was “AMAZING”.  At one point I
was even hiding from everyone because they were being too generous and I did not want
them to give me anything else.  It is very rare that people are so nice to you that you feel
bad and wish you had something to give or do for them in return for their kindness.  This
was definitely one of those moments.

Now you may be thinking that this is the ending of this story, and so did I at the time, but
Fernando had more in store for us.  Next thing I knew, we were back on the bus and
heading back to the distillery.  We got off the bus and we were whisked into the distillery
to do some barrels signing and see a secret locked room.  The room not only had a locked
door on the outside but also a metal locked gate.  Inside was a massive bulls head
mounted on the wall and numerous 7 Leguas antiques.  Shortly after, unfortunately, we
had to leave but I got the feeling that everyone at 7 Leguas would have stayed there with
us all night.  We got on the bus and as we were getting ready to leave we saw that
everyone was outside the distillery waving bye to us and they did not stop until we were
far down the street.

On the bus and for days to come, all of us kept talking about the kindness, tequila,
mariachis, potatoes, and everything else this company had done for us.  One word kept
coming up in the descriptions and I think it is the best way to describe everything about 7
Leguas and that is simply “AMAZING.”  I only hope that someday I can repay them for
their kindness and making this truly a trip of a lifetime.  I will never forget it.

IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE, YOU HAVE TO VISIT THE 7 LEGUAS DISTILLERY AND
EXPERIENCE THEIR KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY.  I bet you will walk away saying it was
amazing too.
