One Members View On Attending One Of Our Tastings
Written by Michael Moore

Tequila Joe’s Tasting Aficionados had a tasting on March 16, 2007 which was held at Ashley’s
house, a current member. From the start, Tequila Joe was there to welcome everyone and make sure
people were comfortable with what was going on. There was a table set up in which the bottles
being tasted were displayed as well as table stands showing Tequila Joe’s ratings of how he
interpreted the taste of each tequila. This was a great way to understand a little information about
the different kinds of tequila, as well as what to expect from them.

As the tasting began, Tequila Joe gathered the group of around 20 and poured each member a
shot of the first brand of tequila. The tequila was poured out evenly by a dispenser which pours a
half ounce automatically. This allows for the perfect amount to be tasted and enjoyed before the
next tequila is tasted. As everyone was gathered in the kitchen, Tequila Joe gave a brief description
of the tequila and then began to tell everyone how to taste and enjoy it. This portion of the event
was the most enjoyable because it showed a different side to drinking tequila. While in college or
most of your adult life, people think of tequila as grabbing the shot glass and pounding it back with a
lime to help alleviate the harsh taste. Tequila Joe showed a different side of tasting tequila, by
holding the shot glass up to the light and slowly swirling you can see the legs of the tequila. Each
tequila is different and when held to the light you can see the different colors, texture, and legs as it
swirls around the glass. Next, he showed us how to smell the tequila because each one has a very
distinct aroma. This was actually very fascinating because of a trick Tequila Joe showed everyone.
The trick to smelling tequila and enjoying the different aromas is to first smell with your mouth closed.
Then, by opening your mouth and breathing in with your mouth and nose it allows for a very different
smell of the same tequila. Tequila Joe’s final instructions were to take a small sip and let it sit in your
mouth, and then swish it around to taste the differences within the tequila. Learning the actual
process of sipping tequila and enjoying the different aspects is what made the tasting much better.

The people attending the event were great. They all were very friendly and talkative, making
everyone feel comfortable during the event. It became a group of people talking about the different
tastes of tequila and which one was their favorite. Having the six different tequilas to taste showed
drastic differences from what was typically thought of as a quick gulping drink to something that was
enjoyable. The sharp taste of some tequila’s, especially the Reposado tequilas, gave characteristics
that were not familiar with the average person. One of the tequila’s, actually had a chocolate taste
to it which could only be enjoyed if someone was sipping on it instead of chugging the tequila.
Overall, attending this event of Tequila Joe’s Tasting Aficionados helped to gain knowledge on tequila
and allowed for the appreciation of a different way to taste a product that I was not familiar with.
